Routine Pelvic Examination

The thought of having your first gynaecology exam might be daunting, but it is a straightforward and quick procedure that is an integral part of maintaining your overall health. Once you understand the purpose of a routine well-woman exam and what it involves, you will realise that there is nothing to worry about or be embarrassed about.

What is the purpose of a pelvic exam?

The purpose of your routine annual gynaecology exam is to check your female organs to ensure and maintain good gynaecological health. The physical exam includes an external and internal pelvic exam, a pap smear, and a breast exam.

What happens during a pelvic exam?

As part of your exam, you will also be asked questions about your family history, current health, and sexual activity. In addition, you can also expect to be asked questions about your menstrual cycle, sexual activity and partners, contraception, STD prevention, pregnancies, and other lifestyle habits.

Some of these questions will be quite personal in nature, but you should always answer truthfully because it might be necessary for your health as well as the treatment Dr Moodley provides. You should have complete confidence that what you tell her is kept confidential.

Your routine exam is also a time to ask any questions you may have. There are no wrong questions to ask regarding your personal health, and the more knowledge you have about your body, the more likely you will take care of it properly.
